Derrick moved to North Dakota after graduating from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2007. Originally from Bemidji, Minnesota, Derrick received a Bachelor of Arts in English and in Anthropology from the University of Minnesota, Morris, in 2002. Derrick worked with the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture for two years before moving on to law school at the University of Minnesota, and has been very active working with sustainable agriculture and local food systems. He has given presentations on local food systems and sustainable agriculture at events in Minnesota and North Dakota, and at the Rural Youth Summit in Ames, Iowa. Derrick was also an extern for the Honorable Lenor Scheffler at the Upper Sioux Tribal Court in Granite Falls, Minnesota. Derrick received his Juris Doctor Magna Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in May of 2007, and moved to North Dakota to work for the Sarah Vogel Law Firm in August of 2007.
Derrick’s practice focuses on agricultural law, American Indian law, environmental law, and legal work supporting small businesses and economic development. He is presently admitted to practice in the state and federal courts in North Dakota and Minnesota, and in Fort Berthold District Court and Standing Rock Tribal Court.
